USB Type-C is the new Connector for all Next Generation Products

Delivering data rates up to 10 Gbps and up to 100 W of power, USB Type-C is the new connector for all next generation products. Perfectly tailored for emerging product designs, it offers rich interface capabilities with ‘Alternate mode’ support. Together with these improved capabilities comes easier design and usability with fully reversible plug orientation and cable direction, making USB Type-C far more convenient for consumers and helping deliver a true Plug and Play experience.

AC/DC Solutions

NXP’s high efficient GreenChip QR/DCM Flyback controller TEA1836 in combination with NXP’s Synchronous Rectifier TEA1892 guarantee highest possible efficiency combined with very low stand-by power. Multiple output voltages as defined in the USB-PD standard provide a challenge to meet energy regulations like Energy star, the US Department of Energy (DoE) regulation and the European Code of Conduct (CoC). NXP’s GreenChip solutions help to meet those requirements.

Authentication

NXP authentication devices enable system and device manufacturers, as well as end users, to enable or disable capabilities based on trust levels established between a host and device. For example, a system might authenticate a charger or cable before enabling high powered fast charging, preventing safety issues that can be caused by counterfeit products. In another example, a system may choose to ask a user to confirm the capabilities of a newly connected untrusted device before enabling capabilities that could potentially harm the system or even compromise network security.

High bandwidth switches

A signal switch provides signal multiplex or de-multiplex function in order to redirect the transmitted signals to same connection port (multiplex switch) or different connection ports (de-multiplex switch). This is needed for Type-C connector to support “Alternate Mode” or “plug flippable” functions, either multiplex or de-multiplex switch function will be used, or sometimes these functions are combined together to become a cross-point switch.

Load switches

A Type-C load switch is an advanced unidirectional N-channel power switch designed to automatically isolate a system from a faulty source or load. It includes under-voltage protection, reverse current protection, over-temperature protection, programmable over-voltage protection, and/or programmable current limit. Type-C load switches provide protection for two main use cases:

  • Consumer use-case where a portable device is being charged. The load switches protects the system from reverse connector plug-in OVP surges or a faulty wall adapter or external supply.
  • Provider use-case where a portable device is providing power to an external load. The load switch protects the system from an over-current, short circuit, or reverse current caused by a faulty load.

LPC Microcontrollers

As part of a complete solution for integrating USB Type-C into a range of end-products, industry leading LPC microcontrollers provide a power efficient solution for:

  • Power negotiation
  • Proper timing and response
  • Support for and switching between different Type-C roles
  • USB Type-C compliance
  • System to accessory/cable authentication (with secure element)

MOSFETs

The USB PD standard defines a range of power delivery regimes known as “profiles”. Unlike previous generations, USB PD incorporates multiple voltage and current options up to 100 W, including 5 V @2 A, 12 V @5 A and 20 V @5 A. Engineering efficient and cost-effective AC/DC power supplies, capable of outputting different voltages on-demand, presents new challenges in terms of topologies and secondary MOSFET selection. Furthermore, widespread industry support for USB PD is driving innovative thinking, with powered USB hubs being incorporated into a variety of devices such as PC docking stations and printers, for example.

Protection and Filtering

NXP offers ESD protection and Common Mode Filters with integrated ESD protection for the new USB Type-C connector. ESD protection is required to achieve system-level ESD robustness, since USB is an external interface. Common Mode Filters are needed to avoid interference between SuperSpeed USB and the overlapping GSM/LTE/WiFi frequencies, which are needed for wireless connectivity of portable devices.

Signal conditioners

A USB signal conditioner is an active signal regenerator which utilizes equalizer and amplifier to reshape the bypassed signal in order to remove jitters and reopen the differential signal eyes for longer channel transmission and reduce the bit error rate. Type-C connector use case would need to transmit or receive USB3 signals through connector, Type-C switch and long trace length. The USB3 redriver can improve the signal eye diagram, extend the link distance and help to pass compliance test.
