ST's state-of-the-art MEMS accelerometers include analog and digital sensors featuring up to ±400g acceleration full scale and from 1.71 to 3.6 V supply voltage

Accelerometers have advanced power-saving features that make them the ideal choice for ultra-low-power applications. These features include low-power mode, auto wake-up function and FIFO buffer that can be used to store data, thus reducing the host processor loading and system power consumption.

ST’s accelerometers are suitable for handheld portable applications such as mobile phones and PDAs, or any other application where low power consumption and reduced package size are required. The new generation of accelerometers, recently introduced by ST, makes a significant step forward in miniaturization, with packages sized only 2x2x1 mm, available with both 14 and 12-leads pinout.

Gyroscope

ST’s analog and digital gyroscopes offer superior stability over time and temperature, with a resolution lower than 0.01 dps/√Hz for zero-rate level. This guarantees the level of accuracy required by the most advanced motion-based applications.

These 3-axis gyroscopes have a single sensing structure for motion measurement along all three orthogonal axes, while other solutions on the market rely on two or three independent structures. ST’s solution eliminates any interference between the axes that inherently degrades the output signal, increasing accuracy and reliability of motion-controlled functionalities.

ST’s gyros measure angular acceleration with a wide full-scale range (from 30 to 6000 dps) to meet the requirements of different applications, ranging from gesture recognition and image stabilization, to dead reckoning and personal navigation. Magnetometer

ST’s digital compasses integrate a 3-axis digital accelerometer with a 3-axis digital magnetic sensor in a single LGA package.

Designed to accurately detect the direction and magnitude of external magnetic fields, ST’s compasses use accelerometer measurements for tilt compensation, thus ensuring very accurate compass heading even when portable devices are inclined.

ST’s low-noise e-compasses offer 2 mgauss resolution and a wide range of full scales, all selectable by the user: from ±2 to ±16g full scale acceleration, and from ±1.3 to ±16 gauss magnetic field full scale.

The compass family includes embedded self-test and smart power functionalities to minimize current consumption.

Temperature

STMicroelectronics’ temperature sensors include both analog and digital temperature sensor ICs. Both types are suitable for use in a wide range of applications, such as industrial, consumer, medical and computer market segments.

The analog temperature sensors feature low power consumption and good linearity, and can operate over a temperature range as wide as -55 to +130 °C. UV Index Sensors

STMicroelectronics' new family of UV Index sensors provides a direct digital output of the ultraviolet index (UVI), the international measurement of the strength of ultraviolet (UV) radiation.

Leveraging ST proprietary technology, UV Index devices are sensitive to UV waves  from UV-A (315-400 nm) to UV-B (280-315 nm) wavelengths that are of greatest concern to human health-related effects. The UVIS25 allows the measurement of the UV Index, without the need of a dedicated algorithm to calculate the UV Index and without specific calibrations at customer manufacturing facilities.

Pressure Sensors

ST's ultra-small silicon pressure sensors use innovative MEMS technology to provide extremely high pressure resolution, in ultra-compact and thin packages. The devices are designed using ST’s VENSENS technology, allowing the fabrication of pressure sensor on a monolithic silicon chip, eliminating wafer-to-wafer bonding and maximizing reliability.

Key technical features of ST’s pressure sensor family include enhanced temperature compensation that allows apps to perform consistently in changing environments, an absolute pressure range from 260 to 1260 hPa that covers all possible user altitudes (from the deepest mines to the top of Mount Everest), low power consumption less than 4μA, and pressure noise lower than 1Pa RMS.

ST’s digital humidity and temperature sensor is based on a planar capacitance technology that integrates the humidity and temperature sensors in the sensing element.

Using our extensive experience in reading small capacitance variations in accelerometers and gyroscopes, ST has developed a differential capacitance sensing element that, when combined with the temperature sensor, provides the relative humidity. The MIS2DH is the first off-the-shelf accelerometer specifically designed for medical applications, including implantable devices classified as Class III by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). These devices include cardiac pacemakers, implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICD), and neurostimulators, as well as new devices for the treatment of chronic problems such as high blood pressure, epilepsy, and tremor-related conditions.

For most of these applications, an embedded accelerometer capable of measuring the patient’s activity and posture is crucial to dose the stimulus delivered by the implantable device and therefore improve the effectiveness of the treatment and the patient’s wellbeing.
